Bring your sewing machine, all of its accessories and materials and join instructor Tina VanDenburg for her sewing workshop on December 9 from 10:00am to 4:45pm. You're welcome to bring your own lunch for this all-day sewing class. Class size is limited. Click here to register. For the December 9 class, Tina will help you sew yoga-style knit pants with pockets. (See class description and materials list below!)
(NOTE: the description in the Library's winter newsletter incorrectly stated that materials would be provided. Though the class is free, those participating will be required to bring their own materials.)
December 9 Sewing Workshop Description (Yoga Style Pants with Pockets):
Pants, pants, pants! Not cut-into-you-after-a-big-meal pants, but soft and comfortable yoga-style pants. Now don't let the name fool you, these pants can be very casual or office ready all depending on the type of fabric you choose.
In the Dec. 9 class, we'll learn how to choose your size on the pattern and adjust the pattern to your unique body and shape. We'll then cut out our pants and sew them up! You'll walk away with a pair of pants that feature a waistband, optional pockets - both front cutaway pockets and back patch pockets - and a front leg pattern piece that is slimmer than the rear leg pattern piece for a more flattering fit. Beginner friendly, Tina asks only that you know how to use a sewing machine and can sew an effective seam. All garments will be made with easy-to-fit and comfortable, knit fabric.
Participants for the garment sewing classes need to bring the following materials with them to the December 9 workshop:
Fabric - A knit fabric with at least 25% stretch along both the grain and cross-grain would work in this pattern. Meaning that if you take 10 inches or cm of fabric in your hand, along both the grain and cross-grain (one at a time!), it should stretch fairly easily to 12.5 inches or cm. A medium-weight jersey, interlock, Ponte, sweatshirt fleece, or french terry is suggested for these pants. {58” wide fabric - smaller sizes require 1 1/2 yards and larger sizes require 2 1/4 yards} {44” wide fabric - all sizes require 2 3/4 yards}
All-purpose Polyester Thread to match your project.
Elastic (optional, but likely wanted) 1/2” to 1” (1.3 to 2.5 cm) wide knit elastic, enough to encircle your waist.
Bring your sewing machine, power cord, foot pedal, standard presser foot, owners manual (important!), bobbins, sewing kit, needles, thread, fabric. Your machine need only be able to do a straight stitch and a zig zag. There are a few machines for lend at the class, call the library to reserve.
Remember to prewash and dry your fabric so that your final project doesn't shrink.
