The Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident in 1979, the Y2K controversy in 1999 and, more recently, the coronavirus pandemic presented major challenges for leaders trying to talk to the public about something strange and complex. Charlie MacInnis used research-based strategies for all three as a major utility company communications manager and, more recently, as a local elected official. He will review the methods that worked for the first two and the major changes that have been needed for the coronavirus. He will also explain why the advice of an ancient Chinese general is still vitally important today.
Charlie recently completed 10 years as an Emmet County commissioner representing Harbor Springs. After exposing millions of dollars in financial wrongdoing and mismanagement, he initiated a revolution that brought about major improvements in county government. Previously, he was public relations director for North Central Michigan College and, prior to that, he served as head of media relations for Michigan’s largest utility, Consumers Energy with additional responsibility for local governmental relations around the utility’s nuclear, fossil and hydroelectric generating plants.
