The Petoskey District Library will be the first library in northern Michigan to provide human “books” to checkout, through their partnership with the Human Library© organization in Denmark. The Human Library© is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. Events are hosted where readers can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from our bookshelf, represents a group in our society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, or ethnic origin.
The concept is simple: People who typically have faced some sort of stigma, volunteer to be a “book” for the day, while attendees can “check-out” a book for one-on-one conversations. Past Human Libraries© have had book titles ranging from “Addict”, “Abuse Victim”, “Police Officer”, “Aspergers”, “Asian-American”, to “Lesbian”, “Elderly”, and the list goes on.
Mary Beauchamp and Mary Hohlbein, at the Petoskey District Library (PDL), have been recruiting, interviewing, and training “books” for the upcoming program. “We are excited about this! Sometimes we don’t know what our own prejudices are, and we think we know a person without even having a conversation with them. This will be a unique opportunity to listen and talk to different individuals, and hopefully we can even learn a little about ourselves,” stated Mary Beauchamp.
Stop by and check-out a book for a 30 minute conversation!
The Petoskey District Library is hosting a Human Library© event on Saturday, August 3 from 11AM-3PM at the Carnegie Building.

Join local young adult artist Ronan Baumhardt every Monday this summer to create fantasy based art! The library will provide art supplies, just bring yourself. All skill levels welcome.
Ronan's interest in art began during his Freshman year of high school. Since then, much of his time has been spent exploring the many forms art can take: Drawing, watercolor painting, and ink illustration being the mediums he uses most. He especially loves the freedom and inventiveness of fantasy art, through which he has found new ways to communicate ideas and stories.
Ronan studied illustration for a year at Kendall College of Art and Design. Currently, he takes ceramics at NCMC and bartends part-time. Next fall, he will continue his education at the University of Michigan. Ronan's hobbies include reading, biking, and playing music.
